To see this in living color, in Starry Night™ with the same settings as before, click on Favourites - Deep Space - Local Universe. Use Find to add: M31, M81, M83 and M87 (click on each of these in the Tully Database so the names show on the screen). Zoom out all the way which should give 191x191 width and height in the upper right corner and will show a circle of galaxies surrounded by black. Set the time to 30,000X and press play. When Andromeda is on your left and about level with M83, press stop. Zoom in a little to fit all the listed objects on the screen. Then take the printed Top View of Plane picture (which is the true plane) and turn it so Andromeda is on your left and is level with M83. Compare the drawing and the screen view. The screen shows the perspective much better than five dots on a page does. From here you can see the oval shape of the universe.

Below is what you get from the internet which loses a lot of definition. Better to get the program and do it directly. The perspective is very strange. You are looking at the real universe from several million light-years outside of it.
